Orchard Wall: Where have we been?

Great question! It’s been a busy last few months, so here are some updates to fill you in on what we’ve been up to:

We have a trumpet player! Well, a flugelhorn player to be exact. Big welcome to Mr. Matt Rodela, who will be providing some mean brass lines on O. Wall tunes.

We’ve been playing some fun shows! In addition to our gigs at Rock&Roll Hotel and Black Cat back in March, we played a show at LivingSocial’s 918 F Street (an awesome building where you can do anything from cooking classes to painting lessons) as part of Chef Todd Gray’s “pop-up” restaurant experience. Last week we also debuted Matt Rodela at Dahlak’s indie showcase.

We’re preparing to record in June! We’ll be putting out a 5-6 track EP in early July, and we’re really excited to re-connect with an old friend, who will be producing the EP.

Finally, we’re going ON TOUR! Book your calendars: Orchard Wall is hitting the eastern coast (DC to Maine) in early August. More details to come.

Looking forward to updating you all as we move forward!

What a year…

It’s hard to believe it was just one year ago when, on a whim, I decided to peruse Craigslist to look for other local musicians. Like many others, I’d played guitar through high school and college, during which most of my “sets” were made up of Dispatch, Jason Mraz, and Beatles covers. It wasn’t until summer 2009 that I began to write and record my own songs.* By the time I moved to DC two years ago I had a handful of songs and began thinking about bringing in a few other local musicians to add parts…and maybe even play a few gigs. Enter Sara Boyce. As luck would have it, Sara was between musical projects and posted on Craiglist looking for an indie/folk group the same day I began perusing the listings. I’d struck “gold” before on Craiglist (found a room, dresser, and a steal-of-the-decade bike lock), but this was a life-changer. The past year has been filled with challenging band roster changes, gigs in venues ranging from my garage in Columbia Heights to bars in downtown Baltimore, broken strings/guitars/pickups, and now…Black Cat. I think this band is the strongest it’s been since Sara and I first sat down to play together 14 months ago, and I can’t wait to share our music with you tonight. Thanks to all our family, friends, and fellow DC musicians for your incredible support…and also our roommates/neighbors who put up with our many practices! It’s been a hell of a year, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. – Steve

*There’s no vocal growls, but I promise this is me.

New recordings!

Hello! So we’ve been sticking to our “homegrown” roots lately and cut some tracks in a friend’s living room this weekend. (seriously, we’re all about the homegrown style. In addition to homegrown folk music, Steve and Mike also brew their own beer. As we write this, we’re filling bottles with a delicious pale ale). Check out the “Listen” box on the right of the site to hear new recordings of Orchard Walls and Honest Words. More to come soon!
